Local Language Social Networking Sites Enjoy Heavy Traffic
LONDON, UK, SEPTEMBER 19, 2007 – Comscore (NASDAQ: SCOR), a leader in measuring the digital world, today released its report into a selection of Germany’s largest social networking sites, based on data collected through the Comscore World Metrix audience ratings service.
Social networking sites attracted 14.8 million unique visitors from within Germany in July – reaching 45.0 percent of the country’s online population. Reiterating its International appeal as the worlds’ largest social networking site, MySpace.com proved to be the most popular social networking property in Germany, attracting 3.7 million unique visitors.
German site StudiVZalso recorded strong traffic, with 3.1 million unique visitors. This student focused social networking property was launched in 2005 as the first in a series of local language sites that have now been expanded into other European countries.
Interestingly, Facebook, which has been growing rapidly across Europe, has not yet made a major introduction to the German market. The site experienced 422% growth in Europe and attracted 7.6 million U.K. visitors in July compared to 177,000 German visitors in the same period – a reach of 1.2 percent of the entire German social networking community.
Bob Ivins, EVP of International Markets at Comscore, attributes the relative success of these sites to their ability to cater for local markets: “These sites are founded on their ability to allow Internet users to communicate quickly and effectively with one another. As MySpace.com’s European success shows, language is an important factor. Being able to develop local language pages has allowed them to attract traffic from a number of European countries.”

MySpace.com’s success in the German market was mirrored across the continent, where it amassed traffic of 25.2 million unique visitors. Two European sites, France’s Skyrock Network and the U.K.’s Bebo.com also recorded significant traffic figures, attracting 13.8 million and 12.1 million unique visitors respectively across the continent.
Despite Facebook’s experience so far in the German social networking community, U.S. based Facebook fared well across Europe as a whole, where it has been the fastest growing social networking site this year. The property has increased total traffic by 422 percent since January to reach 10.8 million European unique visitors. This dramatic growth comes on the heels of Facebook’s decision in September 2006 to open up registration to all age groups worldwide, a change from the previous policy requiring a valid email address from a university, secondary school, or businesses.
